1:30Planning and Designing for Efficient Water and Energy Use
Wine Institute and the American Vineyard Foundation, in partnership with the National Grape & Wine Initiative, recently published the Comprehensive Guide to Sustainable Management of Winery Water and Associated Energy. The document gives wineries of all sizes the tools to complete a self-assessment and make improvements to water and energy use. This panel will present a summary of the guide and highlights from winery workshops sponsored by PG&E. Rebates and incentives available from PG&E will also be described.

The need to obtain a wastewater discharge permit can have a significant impact on winery development plans. The panel will discuss common permitting challenges and will provide strategies for smooth interactions with the Regional Water Quality Control Boards. Robert Chrobak, PE, Program Co-Chair, is a Vice President with Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, with over 25 years experience in water and wastewater evaluation and treatment system design, particularly in the wine and food processing industries, including operational and permitting/regulatory negotiation support.

Christopher R. Hermann, Program Chair, a partner with Stoel Rives LLP, is founding chair of the firm’s Winery and Vineyard Management group. He has particular experience with the purchase and sale of wineries and vineyards, obtaining water rights and land use permits and approvals, advising owners on employment and termination agreements with winemakers.

John A. McKinsey, Program Co-Chair, is an attorney with Stoel Rives LLP and the California Co-Chair for their Winery & Vineyard Law Group. He focuses his wine practice on environmental and regulatory matters, winery licensing, ADA design, compliance, and liability issues.

J. Robert Anglin, Jr. is an attorney in the Hospitality Group at Dickenson Peatman & Fogarty, where his practice focuses on land use regulation and environmental law. He assists wineries, hotels, restaurants, and institutions to obtain government approval to establish and expand their facilities and operations.

Scott P. Bartley, AIA, is a principal architect for Hall & Bartley Architects. His practice has focused on the wine industry since the firm’s founding in 1983.

Rich Boone is as a principal in the Solomon Wine Company of Modesto. Previously he served as Worldwide Director of Consumer Research for the E&J Gallo Winery.

Barbara A. Brenner, an attorney with Stoel Rives LLP, represents clients in environmental compliance and litigation. Her practice is focused on water resources, water quality, and related regulatory matters involving water rights.

Richard Brockmeyer is owner of Wine Industry Investment Consulting, a service advising corporations and associations seeking investment properties in the fine wine and vineyard industry. He has 30+ years of experience acquiring, developing, and managing orchards, vineyards, and wineries for investor owners.

Gary M. Carlton is a Senior Client Manager with Kennedy/Jenks Consultants where he specializes in assisting clients to develop and implement regulatory compliance strategies for wastewater management operations.

Jeff Carroll is Vice President of Compliance at ShipCompliant, the wine industry’s first and only fully automated shipping compliance solution, and is also Senior Product Manager at Six88 Solutions.

Nick Frey became President of the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission in 2006. Previously, he was Executive Director of the Sonoma County Grape Growers Association.

Joe Genshlea is owner and managing partner for Revolution Wines, a small winery in Sacramento, California. He manages the finances, technology, internet marketing and production planning for the winery.

J. Scott Gerien is a Director with Dickenson Peatman & Fogarty. His representation of wineries and vineyards allowed him to develop a special expertise concerning intellectual property affecting these industries.

Michael J. Holman, an attorney with Dickenson Peatman & Fogarty, represents winery owners and investors in the sale and acquisition of grower and winery-related assets as well as business planning and alcoholic beverage compliance for the wine and hospitality industries.

R. Corbin Houchins, a nationally known beverage lawyer who has worked with clients and other counsel in the beverage industry since 197, previously held the position of corporate counsel for E & J Gallo Winery and for Olympia Brewing Company.

Allison Jordan is Executive Director of California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and also retains her role as Wine Institute's Communications Program Manager, providing program management and support for the Sustainable Winegrowing Program.

Mari Kirrane is a Wine Technical Advisor with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Bureau. In this capacity, she is a liaison between the industry and the government on technical winemaking issues.

Ian Malone is the Director of Capital Markets at Premier Pacific Vineyards and a member of the firm’s capital markets and finance team.

Rick McClish is Marketing Director of Facility Development Corporation (FDC) and also serves as President of National Storage Centers. FDC has provided superior construction services throughout Northern California, Oregon and Nevada for over 30 years.

Mark L. Stretars, PE, is a Senior Water Resources Control Engineer and Chief of the Compliance Unit of the (California) State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Water Rights. He has over 35 years of experience with the Division of Water Rights dealing with California water rights law and regulations, Division programs and procedures.

James W. Terry is a member at Dickenson Peatman & Fogarty. His wine industry-related practice includes vineyard and winery sales and acquisitions, alcohol beverage licensing, grape purchase agreements, vineyard leasing, and business entity selection and formation.

Elizabeth Thach, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Business Administration at Sonoma State University, where her fields of specialization are wine business management, leadership training and coaching, change management, and human resource management.

L. Ann Thrupp, PhD is Manager of Sustainability and Organic Development at Fetzer Vineyards. In this capacity, she provides outreach, technical assistance, and information, and organizes educational events, about organic and sustainable farming and wine production practices for growers, wineries, and the broader community.

Josaphine Tuchel is a Senior Program Manager in PG&E’s Energy Efficiency group, focusing on the agricultural and food processing sectors in California. Her work at PG&E also includes collaboration with the Emerging Technologies team to assess the energy-saving potential within the Ag & Food Processing market for applicable emerging technologies and to facilitate industry adoption.

Terry Wheatley, founding partner and chief marketing officer with Canopy Management, brings more than 30 years experience. She was previously director of retail and on-premise development, and later, senior vice president, with Trinchero Family Estates/Sutter Home Winery

James A. Zehren is an attorney with Stoel Rives LLP. His practice is concentrated in construction and design law including business transactions, preventive law and dispute resolution. He emphasizes preparation and negotiation of contract documents; licensing, registration and code compliance issues.
