Every land use decision is an economic development decision. Land use decisions influence, if not determine, where jobs are sited, where people live in relation to those jobs, and the tax base. These decisions also influence what resources are developed locally, and the degree to which we rely on imports, including imported oil. To secure economic prosperity for both the near and long term, land use decisions should be coordinated to be economically and environmentally "sustainable," so successful development strategies have relevance from one generation to the next.
Program Co-Chairs
Stephen M. Antupit, LEED AP of
Mithun,
Susan Drummond of
Foster Pepper PLLC,
Kari-lynn Frank of the
Washington State Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties and
A-P Hurd of
Touchstone Corporation have put on a conference that will explore making land use planning decisions, including water and energy use questions, consistent with economic development objectives, and how to reconcile those decisions with local, state, and federal policy initiatives. We'll discuss energy development; water use; the major statutes governing land use; new legislation; local, state, and federal policy initiatives; and, the institutional roadblocks to success. With the tools for combining economic, environmental, and planning objectives, attendees will take home a powerful set of strategies for improving local and regional planning.
