This seminar addresses the newest developments and hot topics in extracontractual insurance claims in Washington State, along with a discussion of the differences between Washington and Oregon in regard to insurance bad faith. The seminar is co-hosted by two experienced insurance counsel with both policyholder and insurer backgrounds, and addresses a number of topics from both perspectives.

Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the different types of insurance extracontractual claims, discovery issues involving these claims, ethical considerations which arise in regard to bad faith, and successful mediation tips in resolving these types of claims.

Thomas Lether, Program Co-Chair, is the Owner and Managing Shareholder of Lether & Associates PLLC. He has built his business with a simple approach: efficiency, client service, and results. He has been involved in insurance and commercial litigation since 1988. His primary clients include national insurance companies, several smaller insurers and independent adjusting firms. His practice predominantly involves the representation of insurance companies and individuals in the investigation, adjustment and defense of suspected fraudulent insurance claims.

Michael R. Wrenn, Program Co-Chair, is Managing Partner of Wrenn Bender McKown & Ring LLLP. His practice includes representation of insureds in insurance coverage litigation and general business litigation in state and federal courts. He represents a number of local and national companies in evaluating and litigating business cases and insurance coverage issues. His clients include companies in the truck manufacturing, chemical distribution, wood treating, cement manufacturing, well drilling, waste hauling, and landfill industries, as well as municipalities with insurance coverage claims.

Tyna Ek, an attorney with Soha & Lang PS, focuses on insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, medical and legal malpractice defense, catastropic pesonal injury defense, and appellate work. Her coverage experience includes environmental and mold coverage, first and third-party coverage, personal and commercial lines, and complex reinsurance litigation.

Thomas V. Harris is an arbitrator, mediator and private judge with Washington Arbitration and Mediation Service (WAMS). His areas of expertise include construction defects and injuries, medical and professional negligence, products liability, insurance coverage and bad faith, and contracts/business claims. He is certified to serve as a Rule 39.1 mediator for federal court cases.

Seth H. Row, a partner with Parsons Farnell & Grein LLP, is an experienced litigator and legal advisor with an active practice in both Oregon and Washington. He focuses on helping corporate clients resolve complex insurance, business, and employment disputes efficiently and successfully, whether through litigation, arbitration, negotiated settlement or appeal.

Tristan Swanson, an attorney with Ashbaugh Beal LLP, practices in the areas of commercial litigation, construction law and insurance recovery. He previously worked in the Criminal Litigation Division of the Attorney General’s Office, State of Washington. He is a member of the Associated General Contractors of Washington and the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Washington.

Daniel E. Thenell is the founder of Thenell Law Group PC. His practice focuses on the investigation and litigation of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) claims and first and third party coverage claims. Within his areas of practice, he is experienced in the bad faith and claim coverage issues inherent in first party SIU investigations and litigation.
