In April, 2017, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) released its 2017 edition of the A201 family of documents. This release includes updated versions of the AIA’s flagship documents, developed for the design-bid-build delivery model. This includes updates to AIA’s standard form agreements between Owner and Contractor, General Conditions of the Contract for Construction, standard form agreement between Contractor and Subcontractor, and standard form agreements between Owner and Architect, and standard form agreement between Architect and Consultant. Working with architects, contractors, subcontractors and owners, the AIA Documents Committee update these core documents every 10 years to address national industry trends and concerns. These documents are widely used and recognized in the commercial construction industry as a workable template to be catered to the specific dynamics and jurisdiction of a particular project.

Likewise, in 2017, ConsensusDocs, which brings together a coalition of construction industry associations, published updates to a number of its standard form agreements in its general contracting (200 Series), design-build (400 Series) and construction manager at-risk (500 Series) documents. No different than the AIA updates, ConsensusDocs’ updates address current trends, practices, and risk assessment in today’s commercial construction industry. These documents are also serve as a valuable template to be catered to the specific dynamics and jurisdiction of a particular project.
